A guide to words and acronyms you might hear used in shipping

Are you relocating overseas from the UK or Singapore? We can help!

Survey

To prepare for your move it’s important to get all the shipment details correct. Our Boxchain Lite and Lite Plus services give you the opportunity to control the shipped volume, so a home visit survey isn’t always required. We also accept video surveys from clients. For larger moves, we’ll visit you and check what needs to be packed and wrapped. With this information, we can discuss your best shipping options.

Volume

Volume is the most important factor in your move, the key cost of a move is determined by the size and volume of your goods. With Boxchain you have the option to pay per cubic meter (cbm) — which is good for moves up to about 15 cbm. Beyond that volume, we offer our CTR service, which gives you the use of an entire shipping container.

Mode

The mode is the type of shipment. Typically you will hear about groupage, shared load, LCL and FCL. Airfreight is also a mode of shipment. Boxchain Lite is our version of a groupage or shared load with a more relevant service structure.

Origin

Your origin is your residence or point of collection. If you are living in a condo or apartment there might be forms or a deposit to be made with the management, and most condos will install lift padding. All of this needs to be booked in advance. Preparing what needs to be packed before our crew arrives is also important. If we are packing for you, the crew will need direction, and critically, you must check everything has gone before we leave.

Destination

Where are you moving to? We’ll advise you on the correct steps for clearing your possessions at your destination.

LCL

LCL is a direct service for shipments up to about 10 cbm. Nowadays it is a costly operation and not so popular.

FCL

FCL is a direct (sole use) 20ft or 40ft container. At Boxchain we call it the CTR service.

GPG

GPG is a shared load service. This is typically a low volume move. The shipment is consolidated with other jobs and shipped to a port once the mover has filled a container. Transit time is open. It’s cost-effective, but not fast. It all depends on when the mover has a container ready to go.

Air

Air is a direct service. Small shipments are flown to the nearest airport and then delivered by the destination office.

Freight

Freight is the element of your move that accounts for most of the transit time. Ultimately, all moves by sea go in a 20ft or 40ft steel container. Air freight (for small shipments) has a fast transit time but can be expensive.

TOR

For shipments heading to the UK, you now need to complete the TOR (Transfer of residence) ahead of packing.
